It’s no doubt helpful that your vocabulary is simply “splendiferous,” but there’s a lot more to an Outspell victory than just having a great vocabulary. You need to also understand how the point system works in this free online game. Let’s back up a minute. Outspell is a free to play spelling game in which both players are given six tiles. Each tile has a letter on it, and the letters are worth points. When it’s your turn, you use your tiles to create a word by putting them one after the other on the gameboard. You can start using any tile that’s already on the gameboard, so long as you’re not building on more than one letter (you can’t build on existing words). After you’ve played your word, the points are tallied up and added to your score. Then, you draw more tiles to replace the ones you spent. When the tiles are out, the player with the most points wins!
The best tip we can give you should be pretty obvious when you first look at the gameboard. See those spaces marked “x2” and “x3”? Whichever letter you put on those spaces will be multiplied by that number! In other words, if you put a “z” down on a x3 space, you get a whopping 30 points instead of 10! If you still can’t edge past that smart computer opponent using the multipliers, then look around the board to those “shuffle” and “exchange” buttons. The shuffle button will help you to create more words with your pieces by switching them around and giving you new options. The exchange button allows you to swap out letters you don’t want for random replacements.
There are several similar variations of this word game out there, but we’ve never seen any that come with a built-in dictionary. That’s why we love this free online spelling game. Not only does it encourage you to flex your mental muscles by using your existing vocabulary, it helps build your vocabulary by introducing you to new possibilities. Your friends may call it cheating in other versions, but hey, the dictionary is built in! How “fortuitous.”
